"My message? Once we had the feeling that we were all in one big boat sailing in toward a common future. Now we are disconnected and a lot of lonely boats chaotically move in the open sea ... Therefore I think that today I do not have a message that I could address young architects with and that would suit them all, so you can tell your nominees that my message to them is absolute silence ... "

"While the main product of commercial architecture is a bright and memorable form (even though it does not prevent it from being meaningful in its best examples), a different trend in architecture is unfolding - no longer concerned with form, but with light, space, and structure. Interpreting the famous expression from the world of music: "beyond music, there's only noise" and Flauber's "form is an embodied thought", we decided to precede the contest for the Iakov Chernikhov 2012 Award with only one question: "Beyond architecture is there only Form?"

"Our work has no pigeonholes, no barriers. We design the shadow to obtain spaces of light and we can build with heavy elements to obtain weightless and transparent spaces. We go from stressed structures to dense structures, from the small scale of the house to the bigger scale of the city, from reordered nature to prefabricated systems."

Ensemble Studio

A cross-functional team founded in 2000 and led by architects Antón García-Abril and Débora Mesa. Balancing education, research and practice, the office explores innovative approaches to architectural and urban spaces, and the technologies that build them.
